August 2026

June 2026

  • Following graduation in May, Kylie Bremner has left her undergraduate research position but rejoined the lab as a full-time Research Assistant. Welcome back, Kylie! 
  • Saif Albasri joined the Short lab as an undergraduate research assistant. Welcome, Saif! 
  • Bailey McElligott completed her time as a research assistant in the Short lab. She really helped us get the lab off the ground! While we hate to see her go, we’re sure she’ll do great things as an incoming member of UIowa’s Biomedical Sciences PhD program. Congratulations, Bailey! We wish you all the best in your future research!

May 2026

  • Grace Peil graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in mathematics and biology. While we hate to see her go, we’re sure she’ll do great as she takes her next step as an incoming member of UIowa’s Medical Scientist Training Program! Congratulations, Grace! We wish you all the best as a future “double doc!”
  • Jorvik Jensen, an undergraduate at Winona State University, joined the lab as a member of the HCCC’s Cancer Research Opportunities in Iowa (CROI) summer research program. Welcome, Jorvik!

April 2026

  • Rithik Vijaykumar was awarded summer research fellowships through both the University of Iowa ICRU program and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center’s CROI program, to allow him to continue his research full time over summer 2025. Congratulations, Rithik!

October 2025

  • Dr. Short was awarded an Institutional Research Grant from the American Cancer Society to determine how GPx proteins contribute to colon cancer metastasis. Congratulations, Dr. Short!
  • Dr. Short received the Oberley Award from the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center to investigate contributions of glutathione peroxidases to the tumor microenvironment. Congratulations, Dr. Short!

May 2025

  • The Short Lab was awarded an R03 grant from NIDDK to investigate how antioxidant proteins influence intestinal healing and inflammation. Congratulations!

  • Grace Peil’s abstract, “Intestinal glutathione peroxidases differentially contribute to colon cancer cell migration”, was accepted for poster presentation at Digestive Disease Week 2025. Congratulations, Grace!

  • The Short Lab was awarded funding from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust to study therapeutic consequences of redox alterations in colon cancer and inflammation, and to identify new contributors to therapeutic responses using patient-derived organoids. Congratulations!
